Case Study: Newport YMCA

Appreciate

Newport YMCA is in the heart of an economically disadvantaged and ethnically diverse community, close to Newport docklands. They are working to provide vital services and support to everyone in their local community. Services range from: improving health and fitness, accessing information and advice, education/training and tackling homelessness and housing.

Challenges

Before working with Utility Aid YMCA Newport had taken over the premises from a charity which had ran into financial difficulties.

Suzanne Chisholm, Head of Strategic Development & Change stated:

The energy contracts our predecessor had locked into did not appear to offer a competitive price.

How could we help?

  • Audit Energy practice
  • Make recommedations based on market insight
  • Save the organisation £12,000

Analyse

Utility Aid were recommended by colleagues at Cardiff YMCA Housing Association, who too had a positive experience with the organisation. “It was a no-brainer, we discussed with one of your advisers whether YMCA Newport could join onto the Cardiff contact and she made that possible for us.”

Challenges

"Without Utility Aid we would have continued to pay excessive charges for energy, which would have been a drain on our finances."

Recommendations

Utility Aid used their industry expertise and resolve to find Newport YMCA a cost-effective tariff.
Utility Aid signed YMCA Newport into a contract for gas saving them over £7k and for electricity over £5106.

Benefits

Utility Aid were very responsive and helpful and their own processes were rapid. On one occasion when something needed to happen quickly and the person we normally deal with at Utility Aid was not available but three other members of staff worked together to seamlessly resolve our problem. That impressed us greatly

Suzanne Chisholm, Head of Strategic Development & Change.

Action

Utility Aid gave budget security and freed up funds for YMCA Newport. These savings will be invested into their frontline services, such as, maintenance and repair for buildings and improving services for the local community
